Scientology ex-gay reparative therapy inflicted on a 19-year- old gay man

Scientology ex-gay reparative therapy of Allen Averay-Jones

When Australian Allen Averay-Jones was nineteen he was pressured into signing a contract to work for the rest of his life for the Sea Org, the Church of Scientology elite corps who occupy all middle-level managerial and executive positions in the transnational corporation, which aggressively markets unlicensed medical and psychiatric counseling based on the pseudo-scientific theories of L. Ron Hubbard.

Allen has always known that he is gay. He had never shared the fact with anyone in his family. He was also married and had a new-born daughter.

He was outed during interrogation upon entering the Sea Org. He was subsequently subjected to seven to ten hours a night of ex-gay reparative therapy for three weeks.

L. Ron Hubbard despised homosexuals and considered them to be "covert hostile" sociopaths and recommended that if they refused his brand of psycho-therapeutic processing they should be quarantined from society and "disposed of quietly and without sorrow."

In 2009 the Church of Scientology in San Diego signed on with the opponents of Proposition Eight in California that would have legalized gay marriage.

Oscar-winning director Paul Haggis defected over the Church of Scientology's intense homophobia. He said, "I spent thirty-four years in a cult." Lawrence Wright has written an extensive account of Paul Haggis' defection in an article in The New Yorker.

Allen had to quite literally escape from the Sea Org in the dead of night running as he was pursued and dropping all his belongings.

We include below the full texts of Allen's two accounts of his ex-gay reparative therapy. We have left errors of spelling etc. untouched., and itlaicized passages of significance such as the following:

That night i was also told that it was required that i "Dissconnect" with the mother of my new born daughter because quote "You need to dedicate yourself to this, you dont have time for a Surpressive Person like a woman who would have a child of a homo"

...

As part of this process i was again audited and asked a very long series of questions. Some were very disgusting like had i had sex with children or animals i was disgusted that they would even ask that questions... then in amongst all theses filthy things they ask have you had sex with another male .

The e-meter reacted. I had been outed. My worst nightmare was about to come true. None of my family at this point knew i was gay.

From the Ex-Scientologist Message Board (ESMB), December 11, 2009

Hey Guys,

My name is Allan Averay-Jones, i am 21 years old and the Cousin of Fiona Peachy and nephew of Jame & Liz. I share quite alot of personal details in this story and trust noone will judge.

My experience with Scientology is not expansive i have completed several couses in both the Canberra and at AOSH ANZO. Originally i simply completed a Communications course to assit me in my job working for my Aunty at a Cd store in the Canberra Org.

A few years later i went to visit my other cousin at AOSH ANZO just to check on her because i was feeling a bit apprehensive about her being so young and living and working for COS.

Before i knew it i had been forced to watch the Sea Org recruitment movie about 10 times and before i knew it caved and signed my life away.

I was then that after noon driven from sydney to my apartment in newcastle (about a 2.5hr drive) by my handler and made to pack my belongs and leave with him (much to the devestation of my friends who i was living with).

I was then placed on a project prepare and completed a further number of couses (not before being coached on how to call my mum and convince her to pay for said courses) eventually about 2 months later going though my E-metering it became evident that i was a homosexual (something my family did not know at the time) despite having a new born daughter.

Instantly i was sent down to Ethics [Ed. - the Church of Scientology's internal police force who administer punishments] and banned from seeing my cousin any further. I was left in eithics for a week and then body routed to the Sydney City Org being told we had to handle the situation before i could become a working member of the Sea Org.

About a week after arriving at the Sydney City Org, i was being taught how to administer a "Free Personality Test", i was approached by who i now believe was the special affiars officer [Ed. the Office of Special Affairs (OSA) Scientology's external relations cum intelligence agency in charge of security] who told me that one of my friends had reported me as being kidnapped by the church.

I was told to call the police instantly and tell them i was safe and well and here of my own violition. I was then told to contact this friend and "Dissconnect".

That night i was also told that it was required that i "Dissconnect" with the mother of my new born daughter because quote "You need to dedicate yourself to this, you dont have time for Surpressive Person like a woman who would have a child of a homo"

I was staying in glebe with a number of Scientologists who were very dedicated and spent as much of their free time avaliable trying to assist in the brainwashing process feeding me full of Scientology information.

As soon as this happend i became weary of COS but decided to try and stay close to my cousin. Eventually i had to just walk away, i had managed to stay in contact with the mother of my daughter she came to sydney one day and i just left everything.

A hand sketched picture of my mother and me form when i was a small child, a $5000 Mason Gutair, all my clothes except the ones on my back and all my other possessions.

I hoped and prayed my cousin and family would one day come out the other side of Scientology. Fortunatly most of them have and i am so happy for them. I just want to see Fiona Peachy back with her family who love her dearly. I miss you Fiona please come home....

Dear Reader;

The following is my account of how i got involved in Scientology and how i was treated when they discovered i was gay.

There is more to my roller coaster ride in this cult that i will share later but this is about the homosexual discrimination and the physical and mental abuise i suffered as a result.

In year 10 i was working for family in a CD store in Albury, NSW. I really loved my job and loved this part of my family, they always seemed so happy and in charge of life.

I was a very shy teenager and for as long as i can remember had been a gay., tho i dared not tell anyone or act upon it. My Auntie and Uncle suggested that i come and do a Communications Course to help me get more confident.

I was a bit hesitant about this but went ahead and went to Canberra where the place was. I wasn't really sure what "Scientology" was but i always knew that only this part of my family was into it.

The course was a tad odd and i remember thinking of several occasions how is this meant to help me. Well i am one that can testify now this course changed my life. I came right out of my shell and finally could look people in the eye when i spoke with them.

After this i moved a few times with my mum and had no further training for a few years. In this time i had also had 1 heterosexual relationship and we had a daughter.

My next experience with the Church was hearing that my cousin that i was very close to had joined the "Sea Org" and worked and lived with them in sydney. Well i didn't really know what "Sea Org" was but i just wanted to visit my cousin and make sure she was ok.

When i arrived in Sydney from Newcastle i found my way to Greek St in Glebe where i was told my cousin was. I walked in the reception and there she was.

Well this didn't seem to bad, the place was immaculate, and expensive. My reservations were somewhat relived. A lady saw me talking to my cousin and swiftly came over to enquire what i was doing here.

I said my cousin worked here and i just wanted to see her. I was told she was about to come off shift and if i wanted to watch a quick movie to past the time she would put one on.

I agreed. Well i was led to the projector room. The "Sea Organisation" recruitment video came on. They were saving the planet, it needed to be done now, they need more people. It stopped and started to replay... This went on over and over i estimate between 10-20 times...

Finally a lady came in and said she wanted me to answer a questionnaire. I was feeling quite drowsy and went along. I was suddenly on a body routing form all i wanted to do was see my cousin.

I answered the questionnaire and then was body routed back to the movie theater to watch another film this time about LRH. After this was played 3-4 times the lady came and got me and handed me back to my cousin.

She explained that they wanted me to join the Sea Organization as well but it was completely up to me and all we had to do was wait for the Personality Test results to come back and in the mean time we caught up.

The results arrived and they said that the results were ok and i would just need to meet with an Auditor [Ed. - a Scientology pseudo-psychotherapist].

I was led to a very small room and told to sit at the table. I had seen an E-meter before and knew the process. I was asked a series of questions about the exam and weather i answered the questioner truthfully. This was all fine.

When i returned to the lobby my cousin said that i would need to complete a project prepare. I was told i needed to sign a billion year contract as a "token" of my dedication and that everyone just did it. I was led to believe that it was meaning less anyways and at the time did not know the consequences as a result of my defection.

I was told that i would need to complete a number of courses at my own expense to complete this. They said i was to call my mum and tell her i need her to pay for one of the courses and it was really important.

I was drilled through the entire process prior to calling her and actively coached the entire way through it. I felt a bit weird doing this as i had never asked for big sums of money like that before.

I completed my next course in my project prepare fairly quickly it was the Ups & Downs Course ( A course designed to help you improve you outlook on life and deal with any situation). Part of this course was writing down all your Overs [Ed. - bad deeds or sins] and Omissions that you have ever done. This is where the truth came out.

As part of this process i was again audited and asked a very long series of questions. Some were very disgusting like had i had sex with children or animals i was disgusted that they would even ask that questions... then in amongst all theses filthy things they ask have you had sex with another male.

The e-meter reacted. I had been outed. My worst nightmare was about to come true. None of my family at this point knew i was gay.

The Auditor quickly left the room and after about 40 minuets of sitting alone in the room a lady walked in and said I had to go to ethics and we would "handle" the homosexual situation.

I was then led to Ethics and told to study a booklet "The way to Happiness" i had to word clear (look up the meaning of every work contained in the booklet) and i had to memorize the meanings and the entire booklet and i would be tested. This took me almost a week.

During this time i was spending 8-10 hours a day in ethics and then taken to an apartment close by and audited away from the church by a special auditor to handle the gay topic.

This involved the auditor demanding specific, detailed and very private information out of in of my sexual experiences with men and other various aspects of my life.

This would go on for anywhere between 7-10 hours a night. After i completed that course i was going to be put to work with the e-meter doing free personality test on the street..

However a PTS (Potential Trouble Source) situation occurred where a friend reported that he was concerned i was being held against my will.

I was coached by 2 handlers how to handle the police and i was told exactly what to say over and over and there were severe punishments for not following what you are being told.

I was sleep deprived and violated by these questions. I was also given a status of "Non Exsistance" by the church as well.

This meant that no one could look at me or speak to me because they believed that homosexuality is a contagious disease.

I was victimized and abused about my sexuality in that apparent and it still scares me to this day. I wanted to help save the planet so bad and be with my cousin to look after her. But my ice was wearing thin..

The final straw came when the Church some how found out i had regained contact with the mother of my child and i was told to instantly disconnect from her because "What type of woman would want to have a child with a poof.. She must be an SP".

She was the only contact that i had still to the outside world. And that pissed me right off. I remained calm because i knew that i had to be smart to get out.

I snuck out to the tree where i had my mobile phone hidden that night and made a distraught phone call to her.

Come and rescue me please.

She said she would meet me tomorrow at this time. The plan was set.

The next night i tried to organised all my stuff together and pretended to go to sleep with everyone else. I got up about 4am and started to sneak off i tried to grab all my stuff but before i could someone woke up and noticed i was running. He chased after me i had to drop most of my belongings and got in her car and left. I had finally escaped.

I share this story as i believe it shows you the Church of Scientology's total disregard for Human Rights and their attitude towards homosexuals.

There is so much more that happened and i will share those stories when the time is right. This shows how ruthless the cult is and will take advantage of their control over you the second they have it.

Church of Scientology: Physiotherapist Reprimanded for Proselytism

Église de scientologie: un physiothérapeute blâmé de prosélytisme

A Quebec physiotherapist has been reprimanded by his professional order for promoting the Church of Scientology to his patients.

The Church of Scientology is classified as a religion in Quebec, but as a sect in France and other European countries.

Regardless of whether this is a religion or a sect, the code of ethics of the Order of Physiotherapists prohibits its members from promotional activity that is "likely to unduly influence persons who may be physically or emotionally vulnerable."

It was a patient of Raymond Soucy who complained after she noticed pamphlets about the theories of the Church of Scientology placed in the waiting room of his clinic in Shawinigan.

The physiotherapist also sold some of the church's books to his patients. In addition, he posted a petition asking people to denounce the use of medications prescribed in psychiatry.

At the hearing held last year regarding the complaint, the physiotherapist pleaded not guilty, claiming that the literature was public information because it was already on the web.

"The informational and promotional materials about various theories specific to the Church of Scientology have nothing to do with the profession of physiotherapy. Moreover, it is certain that this literature may have a harmful influence on some patients," wrote the disciplinary board of the Quebec Professional Order of Physiotherapy in its recent ruling [official name: Ordre professionnel de la physiothérapie du Québec].

Raymond Soucy "failed to distinguish between his personal beliefs and his professional role, therefore he is guilty of the infractions charged in the complaint," concluded the disciplinary board. Last month, the physiotherapist was ordered to pay a $3,000 fine. La Presse reached Mr. Soucy by telephone at his clinic yesterday, but he declined to comment on the board's decision.

The spokesman for the Church of Scientology of Montreal, Jean Larivière, said he was "surprised" by this disciplinary decision. The Church of Scientology encourages its followers to promote its teachings, he said. "Those who practice Scientology experience benefits on a personal level. It's normal that they want to tell others about it," says Larivière. Nevertheless, a person must be sure to have the employer's permission, he insists, not wishing to comment on Mr. Soucy's case, whose details he does not know.

A controversial movement

"The Church of Scientology is one of the most controversial movements in the world," says the Executive Director of Info-Cult, Mike Kropveld, "But here in Quebec, we receive few questions and complaints about it."

The fact that the Church of Scientology is classified as a religion here does not mean that the movement is approved by the authorities, says the specialist on new religious movements. "This classification does not guarantee anything," warns Mr. Kropveld.

Canadian film director Paul Haggis, who won an Oscar for his film Crash, was one of the celebrities of the Church of Scientology. He was a member for 34 years, but left in 2009. Last winter, he gave a revealing interview to an American magazine that published a stunning article on the organization's inner workings. He accused his former church of exploitating minors and of justifying violence. He also criticized its opposition to gay marriage and the way it treats its critics.

The movement was founded in 1954 by American science fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard and claims 10 million followers worldwide. The Executive Director of Info-Cult questions this. "We do not know what their definition of a member is. Do they count people who are only subscribed to their newsletter? Who took one of their courses? Who bought their book?" asks Mr. Kropveld.

In the latest Statistics Canada census, 1,525 people replied that they are Scientologists. The movement has religious facilities in Montreal and Quebec City.

The Montreal spokesman, Mr. Larivière, believes that the Church of Scientology has many more followers in Canada, including "several thousand" in the province of Quebec. "Many people have read our teachings, but the level of involvement varies. Some come see us every week, others once every three years," he says.

The Church of Scientology bases its practices on Dianetics, techniques that, according to its followers, eliminate illness, anxiety and aggressiveness, among other things.

In the United States, the organization has many public faces, including actors Tom Cruise, John Travolta and Juliette Lewis. In Quebec, singer France D'Amour revealed that she has been a Scientologist for many years on the popular talk show Tout le monde en parle.

David Love: Scientology Narconon - Cult Rehab Center

David Love has published a new video on the connections between the Church of Scientology and its front group Narconon at Trois-Rivieres in Quebec. We have previously written about him shaking Narconon in Canada.

Seen in the video are damning emails evidencing Church of Scientology control of Narconon.

Of Catholic interest you will note at around 1:40 an image of the address sign in front of Narconon. It includes Maison Carignan, a detoxification clinic founded by Dr. Yvon Carignan; and Institut Seculier Les Oblates M.M.I. (OMMI)

The Oblates are known in English as The Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate, and are a Roman Catholic secular institute for women equivalent to a religious order. They were founded by French Canadian priest Fr. Louis-Marie Parent in 1952. In 1958 he founded the Voluntas Dei Institute, another secular institute for laymen, couples, and clergy. It has its headquarters office at the same address as Narconon Trois-Rivieres.

The buildings on the property occupied by Narconon appear to have belonged to OMMI since there is a chapel there.

David Love has also recommended these videos as evidence for Church of Scientology control over Narconon:

The video shows Church of Scientology Training Routines (TRs) that are used in Narconon.

David Love shakes Narconon Canada

David Edgar Love is about to shake Narconon in Canada. Narconon is Scientology's most lucrative front group and sells its dangerous pseudo-scientific treatments for drug rehabilitation through private rehabilitation centers and taxpayer funded government contracts. Sixteen Narconon facilities in the US generate more than $50MM in revenue every year.

David Love, originally from British Columbia, was both a client and a staffer at the Narconon rehabilitation facility in Trois-Rivieres, half way between Montreal and Quebec City. He left in disgust taking with him masses of documentation on fraud and abuse in Narconon (NN) Trois-Rivieres (TR) facility in 2009.

He was befriended by members of Anonymous Quebec, whose right to free speech had been defended by Cardinal Marc Ouellet at his annual press lunch in 2009. Anonymous developed very good relations with the media and government offices.

Love has since then written several petitions and is preparing a lawsuit. As Love has being doing his work preparing his complaints, former Narconon staffers and clients not only from NN TR but US facilities have come forward to share with Love their stories of fraud, abuse, and dangerous detoxification protocols.

Among the most irate are the families of NN clients who have paid $25,000 - $30,000 for Narconon's program only to see their loved ones relapse.

We expect there to be much more reporting in the media over the next several months as Love files his petitions and prepares is lawsuit.

Among the ex-clients to come forth is Robert Vincent Piro, who has recounted his experience of NN TR is his When God Called On My Cellphone, now available at Amazon US and Amazon Canada. Piro writes his eye-opening story from his perspective as a grateful Catholic Christian in recovery.

Piro is the first former client to publish a book exposing Narconon, which contains much evidence that Narconon is nothing but a Church of Scientology operation despite Narconon's protestations that it has nothing to do with David Miscavige's violent and abusive organization.

Canadian Cardinal Marc Ouellet's Three Momentous Statements on Scientology

Canadian Cardinal Marc Ouellet has spoken out strongly in criticism of the Church of Scientology and warned Catholics about it on three occasions over the last two years including his last two annual press lunches in 2009 and 2010 before taking up his present post as head of the powerful Congregation for Bishops in the Vatican. He is regularly cited as a leading candidate to succeed Pope Benedict.

We are proud that Light In The Darkness and For Great Justice have been the only places that Cardinal Ouellet’s momentous remarks have been reported outside the French-language media in Quebec.

The assistance of researchers and translators from Anonymous Quebec has been indispensable. The Cardinal’s statements deserve to be widely-known throughout the Catholic and secular worlds.

Cardinal Ouellet is by far the highest-ranking hierarch in the Catholic world to warn Catholics about Scientology and to publicly criticize it. He has repeatedly posed the question of what the criteria are that tax authorities in Quebec extend tax exemptions to religious organizations.

He raises sharply what the distinctions are in society and government between organizations like the Catholic Church and the great world religious traditions of Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism and organizations like the the Raelians and the Church of Scientology.

We have previously reported his remarks at an ecumenical retreat in 2010 when he stated flat out that Scientology is not a church, followed one week later by his annual press lunch in which he took note of Scientology’s penchant for suing its critics for libel and government action in other countries, by which he undoubtedly referred to moves of the French, German, and Belgian governments to investigate and curb Scientology’s harmful activities in those countries.

The other major hierarch in the Western Hemisphere and the only prelate to speak out against Scientology has been Archbishop Robert Rivas of Castries in St. Lucia. He devoted the last third of his Easter Homily last year to denouncing infiltration of the island by The Way To Happiness International, a Scientology front group that promotes Hubbard's booklet of moral maxims of that name.

The following is a translation of an article on his remarks at his 2010 annual press lunch from the Quebec City newspaper, Le Soleil.

Scientology: Cardinal Ouellet Serves A Warning

(Québec) Cardinal Marc Ouellet served a warning against the Church of Scientology inviting Catholics to be cautious and again asking the Quebec government for clear criteria for an organization to be recognized as a religion.

Even in a country where people respect the pluralism of opinions, the archbishop of Quebec said that he does not want prohibition, but recalls that some countries like France and Belgium consider Scientology as a cult.

"In Quebec, there should be a clearer definition of what constitutes a religion," he declared at its annual meeting with the press of Quebec, Thursday morning, taking care to point out he does not know enough the foundation of Scientology to criticize.

"There are historical religions, he says, but we should not forget that there are cults and all religions cannot be treated equally."

The Cardinal mentions the excesses of the Solar Temple and the mass suicides due to other sects, stressing that the vigilance of the State and citizens was necessary to protect the public against abuse of all kinds.

To the journalists emphasizing that the first apostles of Christ were only a dozen in the Jewish world, the cardinal admitted that strict rules could be wrong for emerging groups. However, the Cardinal stresses that techniques of manipulation and the use of money are things that should motivate people to be vigilant.

In Belgium, Scientology could not meet the criteria for the status of religion. In France, Scientology is also regarded as a cult, not a religion.
